The fastest lazer blaster in the west?
Gee…wonder what THIS movie is all about? Could it be about…cowboys? And…possibly…aliens? Yep…and there’s plenty of both of them in this movie. I gotta admit, I was kinda geeked up with this starring 2 of the bigger action actors of this modern age. You have Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones) and Daniel Craig (the latest Bond) facing off against some pretty nasty looking beasties who are looking for what all cowboys are looking for…gold. And they’ll stop at nothing to get it. So they hijack an entire town and it’s up to the cowboys to get them back.
So that’s the premise and from there it’s pretty much a throwback to the old gunslinger flicks where the cowboys round up their posse of misfits and go after the aliens. And these critters are mean looking. With their beady eyes and their multiple arms and goop everywhere, these things are fast and nasty. But when you’re up against Bond & Indy, you know the creatures don’t have a chance. I don’t want to give away any plot points but let’s just say that Jake Lonergan (Craig) is a bad guy who is trying to make a life for himself. Along the way he & his wife are taken by the aliens. He then finds himself in the desert with some kind of contraption on his wrist and a bounty on his head. The only problem is he doesn’t remember anything and so he doesn’t know what is happening at first. When he rides into a small mining town run by Woodrow (Ford) and his do-no-good son, he soon finds that he controls the only weapon that can defeat the aliens who are attacking from the air. The remaining townspeople who haven’t been snatched by the aliens go on a hunt to destroy the aliens in hopes that their town can be brought back to normal.
As he did with the Iron Man movies, Jon Favreau uses a sense of humor to go along with all the action in this film. It looks authentic enough and the stars do a pretty good job of keeping the movie moving. I guess the only problem I have with this flick is that it’s just what it says it is…it’s about cowboys who fight aliens. There’s no surprises really and not a lot of plot development. You pretty much get what you pay for here and that’s not necessarily a bad thing (oh…and it has Olivia Wilde…who is kinda hot). So if you’re looking for a good popcorn movie that doesn’t require a lot of thought but is fun to watch and has a number of qualified actors involved, go check out “Cowboys & Aliens.” There have definitely been worst summer blockbusters that you could waste your hard earned dollar on (cough Transformers cough).
