What a shock when Pixar is upstaged by Dreamworks in the animation department. But in the case of “Monsters vs Aliens” vs “Up”, I’ll take “MvA” anytime! Although the animation is not as fluid as a Pixar film, this movie is just a blast to watch and has everything I like in movies. It’s funny, has action, likable characters, a plot. All of those things carry “MvA” and make it one of the more enjoyable kid movie experiences of this year.
At the start, we meet Susan Murphy. She is about to be married but on her wedding day, a meteorite crash lands on her and makes her grow to the size of a skyscraper. Needless to say, the government captures her and takes her to their secret underground lair of monsters. Here she meets Dr. Cockroach, The Missing Link, a blob known as BOB and a giant bug that is 10 times the size of Susan. They all become friends and are then brought into action against an alien that is looking to not only recover the meteorite that landed on our heroine, but he also wants to take over the planet! So there is lots of action and humor. The only slowdown is the ongoing dialogue between Susan and her fiance, who has obvious doubts about their relationship.
Lots of great actors involved in this film, with Reese Witherspoon leading the way as Susan. Seth Rogen plays the gellatinous mass known as B.O.B. and Stephen Colbert has a hilarious turn as Earth’s President. They are worth the price of admission for their roles alone! LOL
Anyway you look at it, this film has got something for everyone. If you like films like “Kung Fu Panda” or “Cars”, you will love this movie! Clocking in at under 1 hour & 30 minutes, it’s a perfect length for younger kids and it moves at a great pace that should keep everyone happy. If you get a chance, see it in the theater before it’s too late. But I highly recommend it and I will be first in line to buy it on DVD when it comes out!
